What is an Oxley Sail?
The Oxley BORA and LEVANTE are unique self-stabilizing spinnakers designed for cruising sailors who want extra downwind speed without the instability of traditional spinnakers. The sail's wing creates a spreading effect on the middle of the sail, helping to stabilize the boat and reducing the need for constant adjustments, especially when using an autopilot. This makes it a comfortable option for sailors who want a relaxed, efficient sailing experience.
What is the difference?
The BORA model features a three-dimensional, airfoil-shaped wing that inflates with wind, acting like a batten to flatten the sail. It's designed for wind angles between 60-180 degrees and wind speeds from 5 to 25 knots. The BORA sail is slightly smaller and better suited for rougher conditions, making it ideal for heavier yachts or those designed with maximum beam aft.
The LEVANTE model on the other hand, has a curved fabric wing that creates lift without inflating, making it more suitable for moderate conditions. It's effective at wind angles from 70-180 degrees and wind speeds from 2 to 20 knots. This sail is larger and better for conditions where stability and ease of use are priorities.
Both sails are excellent for long-distance cruising, particularly when using autopilot, as they reduce rudder pressure and minimize corrections needed by the autopilot. FAQ
